Speak easy

This journey begins with a brisk walk from the residence to the nearest metro station. Crisp leaves crackle while a fresh wind whisks about. A few stops later the rich architecture of Old Montréal engulfs me. This is the Centaur Theatre Company. Through a doorway, I step on the stage where Speak Easy will be performed. The setting is intimate and comfortable. It was apparent to me that this performance is as enjoyable to watch as it is to be part of. The actors’ energy radiated throughout the entire hour and a bit.

It is natural to desire peering in people’s minds. In this play, the audience witnesses an entire radio show taking place in of the protagonist’s mind. Our mind flirts with the line between madness and sanity. In the end, who exists in this world? Are we all part of a vivid dream?

Performing art-forms, including theatre, are, in my opinion, the only creations for which the original has value. That is to say that reproductions of photos, paintings or any other visual art are more valuable than the original because they present the work and its meaning to anyone who wishes to appreciate it. On the contrary, music, concerts and theatre for example, have a uniqueness during every performance. This originality and liveliness is priceless.
