Database as Symbolic Form
There are many techniques of data visualisation. In particular, the choice to visualize data in form of a series of events enacted as a story or narrative is a solution, which may occur naturally and remain unnoticed. This form of visualization is easy for users to understand. When properly executed, this type of reconstruction of data establishes its own environment, complete with visual and textual languages and methods of accomplishing tasks. Visualisations may be compared to subjective interpretations of reality in virtual or imagined space with simulated ligatures between points of data. Manovich suggests that although data appears to be a passive element in complex computational algorithms, it is in fact just as operational as the system’s other pieces. The creation of this data requires careful selection. The elements placed in arrays are never purely random. A decision process is enacted for the information to make its way in the database.
A vast majority of internet users are familiar and host a presence on facebook, a compulsive online community where individuals can get in touch by befriending each other. This system is simply a collection of specific personal details about its users, which are available to everyone at varying levels depending on social relations regarding particular pieces of data. It can be argued that the only reason this amalgamation of data is successful is because of its presentation. By organizing unimaginable numbers of personal information in creative and natural ways, the creators of facebook establish an environment similar to brick and mortar society while enhancing its best features. Narratives complete with inciting incidents, conflicts, climaxes and resolutions develop themselves through the insertion of new data to be stored in the system. These fragments are organised and interpreted to entertain or enhance the user’s experience.
