Grafitti: Word vs. Image

Graffiti artists have a knack for finding flaws and woes of society. Through their art, they are able to criticize and bring about social consciousness for events that often pass below society’s radar. I am reminded of the graphical representation of bandages placed on cracks of the Turcot Interchange. This reminds passers-by of the temporary solutions government officials use in an attempt to remedy the structural problem. Image based graffiti possesses similar qualities to traditional painting art. Text based street art is more suited for clear labelling. In this respect, text-based graffiti may be used for establishing ownership or subverting commercial tactics, as the latter are usually also text-centric. Image based graffiti appear more expressionistic. These works utilise the space around them to establish new meanings. These artists believe their works are a pertinent way to display their convictions about society and beg me to question my ability to question society.
